Durham County announce March Challenge Cup ticket winners as Gateshead RFC

Gateshead RFC have dedicated this nomination to Ralphy Fawcett (Age 80) who they describe as

''A legend at his club for being the most welcoming and helpful man you ever want to meet''

"He has helped so many players over the years with encouragement, assistance and coaching that he is affectionally known in the club as 'Fatha"

Mr Fawcett starting playing Prop at Gateshead RFC or Gateshead Fell as it was then, at the age of 11 and played his last game at 60.

At 63, he had an operation and we are told his first question post surgery was 'when can I start playing rugby again?' At Durham County RFU we love to see Rugby is such a big part of peoples lives, both old and young.

Mr Fawcett is still the groundsman at Gateshead RFC, marking 2 pitches every week, placing the flags and running the 2 baths to the perfect temperatures. He even puts bubble bath in the home bath but not the away one!

He has recently described one of his proudest moments as playing a Boxing Day game with his 3 sons, James, Keith and Iain. With his daughter Anne and wife Isobel watching from the side lines.

Durham County RFU would like to acknowledge this commitment to Rugby and the Core Values that are reflected through out this story!

The Challenge Cup will kick start the Newcastle 2019 European Club Rugby Finals on Friday May, 10 at 7.45pm at St James’ Park, for more information go to: http://www.newcastle2019.com/
