First DCRFU Rugby Nights Event

Updated: Jan 13, 2023

The new year saw the start of Durham Counties Rugby Nights Project (project outline can be found here) with an end to end game between Washington and Westoe Socials.

The game was hosted by Washington at the fantastic Washington Football Hub facility on their Artificial Grass Pitch, with Westoe putting out their socials for the first time this season. The person in the middle was the rather appropriate Doug Wardle, a man after many players own hearts, mixing refereeing whilst still playing social rugby when he can for Sedgefield District RFC. With the home side picking him up so he would be able to fully enjoy the post-match social it was safe to say everyone involved in this game knew what the mission was; Play a good game, score some tries, forget about the score 2 min’s after the game, and focus on the post-match socialising!

A mention must go to South Shields and the players that turned up with boots looking to pick up some game time and helped bring the Westoe numbers up to allow for subs.

The game started with Washington looking strong and scoring quick, when Westoe’s hands started to get used to being outside again and warmed up they managed to engage their backs and the game turned into end to end rugby. In the end the final result was 38-52 with Westoe taking the win.

After the game everyone was rather positive even with all the running after the holiday season and many only just recovering from Flu! The fixture will be returned when the days are longer and Westoe can take advantage of the lighter days.

If any other clubs want to get involved with adult male social fixtures kicking off in the evening please contact LauraLines@rfu.com
